cecily + stephen | a modern and relaxed excelsior wedding

To know Cecily + Stephen is to love them!!

Seriously. Their engagement session at Clipper Mill was so full of fun and laughter that I knew their wedding would be, too. Cecily + Stephen have the best personalities: laid back, loving, thoughtful, and up for anything. It made their wedding day at the Excelsior so much fun to photograph!

Cecily + Stephen’s wedding was the perfect blend of historical elegance and industrial chic. It was relaxed and fun, yet romantic with a bit of edge. Every single person that attended their wedding had the best time… the dance floor was full the entire night, with multiple generations dancing at all times!

11 Memorable Moments and Details from Cecily + Stephen’s May Wedding at Excelsior:

  1. Cecily + Stephen got married at The Excelsior in Lancaster, PA. Since I hadn’t photographed a wedding there before, I took a trip up to Lancaster a few weeks before their wedding, to tour the space with Cindy of Planned Perfection, their wedding planner. Having plenty of time beforehand to get to know the space and plan out the photos I wanted to get really helped maximize our time together during their wedding.

  2. Their venue was the perfect mix of historic and elegant yet industrial and unique — with exposed brick and plaster walls and exposed beams in the courtyard, the ivy growing up the brick walls softened the space and provided a gorgeous and lush natural backdrop.

This multi-building property is a National Historic Landmark that includes outdoor courtyards, an elevator shaft turned speakeasy, and an underground brewer’s catacombs. I couldn’t get enough!

3. Since The Excelsior is right in downtown Lancaster, there were a ton of amenities around for Cecily + Stephen’s guests! Having a great hotel within walking distance of your venue is a big plus, especially with a large wedding party. The Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square is just a quick walk down King Street from The Excelsior which made it so easy for everyone!

4. Cecily was so confident and beautiful in her form-fitting Pronovias gown. It was a simple design with elegant beading down the sides that expressed her personality perfectly: effortless and subtle, yet interesting and striking all at the same time. Her long, voluminous ponytail, romantic makeup, and light pink Badgley Mischka heels complemented the look flawlessly.

Stephen’s suit was also full of style: a dark navy blue, it featured white polka dots in a strong and structured geometric design. I love when grooms step a little outside of the box and rock a wardrobe choice that reflects their personalities.

5. The flowers were as big and beautiful as Cecily’s ponytail and caught your eye in the same way. A classic white and green color palette with white orchids cascading down the front of Cecily’s bouquet left me speechless. Every arrangement was full, lush, organic and a little bit wild in the best way. ;)

6. Before meeting Stephen for their first look, Cecily had a first look with her dad. Exposed brick and plaster walls with tons of natural light provided the perfect background for these emotional portraits… everyone had happy tears streaming down their cheeks! Documenting these joyful, intimate and raw moments gets me every time.

7. Cecily + Stephen chose to have their first look on the observation deck of the venue. Private and quiet, I couldn’t think of a better spot for this intimate moment as they read notes they wrote to each other… this is my new favorite way to carve out a few minutes of memorable time together on your day. Bonus: you’ll always have these words to look back on and relive the memories of when you first saw each other on your wedding day!

8. We took all of their wedding party and family portraits before the ceremony, in the Empire Room. Located at the front of the venue, this room features historic floor-to-ceiling windows that flooded the space with natural light. Another plus? It was large enough to hold both of their families and large wedding party and still leave us with tons of space to work and move around. This room is definitely one of my top 5 favorite family portrait spots of all time. We were lucky enough to have a gorgeous sunny day, but if weather became an issue, this room would have been the portrait spot AND ceremony location… not a bad plan B!

9. Cecily’s uncle officiated their ceremony in the open-air courtyard and included lots of meaningful and hilarious stories about how their relationship came to be… lots of laughter plus super bright sun and warm afternoon temps with a green wall forming an epic backdrop for their vows made this an unforgettable ceremony.

10. After the ceremony, cocktail hour was held in the sunken courtyard and brewer’s catacombs. They had passed hors d’oeuvres, a Tuscan charcuterie station, and a seafood station complete with live goldfish swimming in bowls that decorated the table. I’ve never seen anything like it!

11. When it was time to start the reception, Cecily + Stephen entered from the corner… a grand sweeping entrance down the historic, curving staircase. The reception also included an elevator shaft turned speakeasy where guests could grab Old Fashioneds, a dessert bar with every dessert imaginable, and a late night snack of cheeseburgers and fries. Howie from 3 West Productions kept the dance floor rocking at the highest level and C+S danced their way into newlywed life with the best energy!

Cecily + Stephen, you are the sweetest and most adorable couple, both inside and out. You are so effortlessly in love and were such a joy to photograph! No matter what the future holds, I am confident that you will come out on top, because of your laid-back and confident personalities. Thank you for letting me capture your wedding day. I hope you love your portraits as much as I do!

Naomi

abbie + kyle | a modern boho wedding at wyndridge farm

Abbie + Kyle are a couple that never stops laughing, but their bright and beautiful blue-skied wedding day was no joke… it was actual perfection!! Not a cloud in the sky, a radiant bride and groom with a wedding party of more than 20 of their closest friends and family members, the most gorgeous sunset and golden hour portraits and a relaxed and sentimental feel to this romantic boho wedding day at Wyndridge Farm; it all felt like a DREAM!

I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am to share some of my favorites from Abbie + Kyle’s stunning October wedding — it was one I won’t soon forget!

8 MEMORABLE MOMENTS AND DETAILS FROM ABBIE + KYLE’S WYNDRIDGE FARM WEDDING

  1. Abbie kicked off the morning by popping champagne with her best ladies by her side in the garden at Wyndridge Farm.

  2. She then won the award for the most organized bride with the most details for me to photograph. Abbie proceeded to unpack 3 separate (and huge) very organized storage boxes full of:

3 pairs of shoes, 2 dresses (with a pearl hanger!), a personalized denim jacket with pearls, an invitation suite she designed herself with copper, terracotta, jade green and peach accents, extra ribbon, dried florals and greenery, an antique gold tray for her jewelry, vow books, a pearl clutch, multiple ring boxes, perfume, wax seals and more… I loved every single piece!

  3. Abbie made all the wedding signage (to compliment the invitation suite) including an amazing champagne seating card display for all their guests and drink signage at the bar that incorporated both of their pups.

  4. To honor Abbie’s late brother, his 3 best friends walked Abbie down the aisle one at a time, to meet her dad.

  5. Kyle’s reaction upon seeing his beautiful bride coming closer… not a dry eye for miles!! This was after an emotional first touch while reading notes from each other before their pastor led them in an intimate prayer circle.

  6. Forte Florals created the most beautifully whimsical and romantic boho florals that were not only in the bouquets, but lining the ceremony aisle and hanging from above the outdoor chapel: eucalyptus, baby’s breath, pampas grass and textured flowers in shades of orange, rust, peach, coral, terracotta and marigold.

  7. The largest dessert table I’ve ever seen with a 2-tiered cake and HUNDREDS of bite-size treats (cannolis, brownies, cupcakes, whoopie-pies… plus more I don’t know the names of)!

  8. As an alternative to a sparkler exit that was just as photogenic and fun but made a lot less mess and had no safety concerns… tinsel gold wands for every guest! The DJ handed them out on the dance floor during the last song and then everyone lined up on the patio steps to send the happy couple off!

Cheers to you, Mr. + Mrs. Micik!!! Your wedding day was absolutely incredible — so full of love, joy, beautiful handmade details and meaningful moments we were SO grateful to be a part of. If you continue to dance and laugh through life together even a fraction as much as you did on this day, you’re doing it right!

ps: Clover and Nala are so lucky to have the best parents!! ;)

britton + andrew | a sweet, sentimental september wyndridge farm wedding

Getting to know Britton and Andrew has been an incredibly rewarding, fun and memorable experience… these lovebirds genuinely know what’s important in life and love and work tirelessly to better their relationship and the lives of those around them.

From the first time we met, their kind, compassionate, bubbly and passionate personalities have shown through every interaction. They are soulmates who share a deep love of faith, family and adventure — and their wedding at Wyndridge Farm was the perfect blend of all of those.

Here are some favorites for you to enjoy from their beautiful early September wedding!

8 MEMORABLE ELEMENTS AND DETAILS THAT MADE UP BRITTON + ANDREW’S ELEGANT FALL WEDDING:

  1. Britton illustrated the chapel from their venue to be incorporated into the design of their letterpress invitation suite as well as including copper wax seals with their monogram. She also hand-designed all of the signage and table numbers!

  2. Andrew designed and built a custom wooden display wall for their creme brulee desserts with ‘creme de la creme’ at the top in white script.

  3. They cut their specialty Italian bakery cake with Andrew’s Marine Corps sword!

  4. The color palette of the bridesmaids dresses, all of the florals and the reception tablescapes; warm, textured, rich and full of cozy Fall vibes with peach, mustard, rust, copper, ivory, gold, lush greenery… twinkle lights hung from the ceiling structure and candles at each table created such a romantic vibe!

  5. Britton had a lace heart sewn into her dress that was taken from her mother’s wedding dress material. She also had her own wedding dress custom designed to have pearls lining the back of the dress!

  6. Britton had a first look with her dad and twin brother and then not only shared a handwritten note with them, but welcomed their pastor in for prayer.

  7. Andrew wrote and performed a song for Britton on his guitar (just as he had done early on in their relationship), that he sung to her privately after the ceremony in the Inn at Wyndridge before their reception begun.

  8. They exited their ceremony with a confetti recessional and a passionate first kiss dip before leaving the chapel and at the end of the aisle!

Congratulations, Britton + Andrew!! You two are simply fabulous humans individually… and together as a married couple: watch out world! You’re destined for amazing adventures and I can’t wait to see what’s next for you both… thank you for allowing us to document all the love and joy that was present at your wedding, it was truly the best day!

erin + mike | a colorful and fun summer Wyndridge Farm wedding

Clouds were rolling in, but not a drop left the sky. The Inn was buzzing as the wedding party got ready for their celebration. A sense of calm excitement prevailed as love and laughter could be heard throughout every part of their glorious day.

Erin + Mike’s wedding day at Wyndridge Farm was full of everything these sweethearts could have ever asked for: family, friends, fun (the energy on the dance floor was SO good!) and the most beautifully colored and lush florals to compliment the vibe of this working modern farm among the rolling hills of Pennsylvania.

As the day progressed, the sun would periodically show up through the clouds allowing the groomsmen to sport their sunglasses and show off the dapper dudes they are. Erin’s bridesmaids wore a mix of solid dusty blue dresses that seamlessly complimented the natural setting while also allowing the texture and color of the florals to pop.

Their day ended with a glowy sunset illuminating them in the most beautifully soft, romantic light that definitely reminded me of our time together at their golden sunset engagement session… E+M, you two are simply perfect together. I’m so glad all of those high school conversations led to this big day!

6 THINGS THAT BROUGHT SO MUCH JOY AND VIBRANT COLOR TO THEIR WEDDING DAY…

  1. In front of the fireplace at the Inn, Erin had a first look with her Dad and then outside on the patio, Mike saw her for the first time. Both were incredibly special and sentimental. When couples prioritize seeing and spending time with the most special people in their lives before walking down the aisle, it makes for not only incredible photos, but so much relaxed happiness!

  2. …that BOUQUET (actually all of the florals from Splints and Daisies)!!!

  3. The personalized wood gift boxes full of goodies for Mike’s groomsmen were a huge hit!

  4. The clouds were overly dramatic (fun fact: I’ll take a cloudy day like this anytime since it means no harsh shadows/squinty eye concerns) but the rain held off and they had a beautiful outdoor ceremony at the chapel! Erin’s niece was the flower girl and took her job very seriously. :)

  5. The custom neon sign with their new last name hanging on the copper arch that Erin’s dad designed and built behind the sweetheart table.

  6. The surprise floating heads of Erin + Mike using their high school portraits (since they knew each other in HS!) that made an appearance on the dance floor as their reception got underway.

  7. The choreographed dance moves during all of their special dances; Erin and Mike’s first dance and both parent dances had amazing moves: dips, twirls and spins that entertained their guests from start to finish!

holly + josh | a vibrant and joyful rainy Wyndridge Farm wedding in May

It was a rainy and unseasonably cool this Memorial Day weekend, but that didn’t stop Holly and Josh from having the biggest smiles on their faces as they got married at Wyndridge Farm in a ‘quirky, different, and not too traditional’ ceremony that was respectful and reflective of who they are as a couple and ended with a packed dance floor before dinner even started… what more could you ask for?!

Their love story began as a mutual friend started a monthly dinner party where a group of friends pick a theme and meet at someone's house to cook and eat together. They met at one of those, talked some more at one a few months later, and then had their first "I'm not sure if this is a date" date at IKEA. That date lasted 13 hours and included their first coffee together of many more to come…

“Before I met Josh, I made a list of things I desired and required in a partner. He checks every box… (and the list is hanging up next to his desk to remind him of that).”

urban-row-photo-wyndridge-farm-adult-slushies_0028.jpg

6 REASONS WHY HOLLY + JOSH’S WYNDRIDGE FARM WEDDING WAS SO UNIQUE + MEMORABLE:

  1. Holly was an incredibly relaxed bride the morning of the wedding (and this candid photo below is one of my favorites - the Inn at Wyndridge had an air of calm excitement and anticipation as everyone got ready), despite the weather forecast forcing their outdoor ceremony to move indoors to Plan B… there was no shortage of love, smiles and witty jokes during their vows.

  2. Those colorful floral Jessica Simpson heels and their way too cute coffee mugs.

  3. Josh had his 3 piece suit custom designed, tailored and personalized by Baltimore Custom Clothiers; the buttons, lining and attention to detail were impeccable. He also wore it for their engagement photos at the Bromo Seltzer Clock Tower; it was so stylish and perfect (see more HERE)!

  4. Holly’s 90+ year old grandmother was her flower girl!

  5. They had a ringwarming station at their wedding ceremony for guests to hold and warm the rings with their best wishes before finding their seats.

  6. For dessert they sipped coffee and enjoyed a cannoli in lieu of a traditional cake - The Traveling Tap provided gourmet coffee drinks for all of their guests!

When it was time for the ceremony, Holly’s close friend Adam married them; they exchanged vows that were heartfelt and hilarious while the rings were full of warmth and love. It was incredibly heartwarming to see so many friends and family ready to celebrate with these soulmates!

erin + mike | a summer sunset engagement in northern maryland

As the sun was setting at Erin + Mike’s picturesque property in Pylesville, MD, we were in the exact right place and time for the most magical golden glow as these lovebirds popped a bottle of bubbly and celebrated the life they’ve built together.

Erin planned and styled the entire vibe of their session to be among nature, yet classy, fun and full of joy; between their outfits, the furniture and the baby blue champagne bottle that matched her nails, I couldn’t get enough and am SO excited to share their engagement session in northern Maryland with you!

Erin has an incredible vegetable garden on their property and since their engagement session, they’ve adopted an adorable black lab named Sincere. The meals they cook and the #urbanrowpup adventures they share together are what make their lives so enriched by where they live… it was such an honor to be able to document these moments on land that means so much to this sweet couple!

erin + brandon | a romantic and timeless maryland wedding

Erin and Brandon had been planning to get married in June, but when the pandemic required their plans to shift, they not only changed their date, but had to change their venue and church as well. Erin sewed floral masks that coordinated with her bridesmaids’ dresses and bouquets in shades of pink while the week before the wedding, they decided to move their reception plans for a ballroom wedding, outside under a tent… these two have been through so much together before ever even walking down the aisle!

urban-row-photo-tented-summer-wedding_0031.jpg
urban-row-photo-maryland-country-club-wedding_0034.jpg

The one part of their wedding day that never changed was a location Erin had suggested to me for some of their portraits: the bridge along Paper Mill Rd. on the way to their venue. The architecture and design of the historic bridge is incredible: the entire structure is painted white with incredible lines and geometries to play with as a backdrop for photos… I was immediately OBSESSED and the photos we took here are EPIC!!

urban-row-photo-unposed-fun-candid-wedding-portrait_0023.jpg

Erin had 2 pairs of wedding day shoes ready: sparkly silver Betsey Johnson heels that complimented her jewelry for the beginning part of the day and rose gold sparkly keds with pink laces that worked so well with all the shades of pink in her wedding flowers and photos on a bridge, of course…

Throughout the entire process, they handled all of the challenges thrown at them with so much grace and a positive attitude… but when you get to know Erin and Brandon, you realize that’s just how they are as people. Erin’s smile will light up any room she walks into and Brandon’s relaxed and caring demeanor brings a calm sensibility to every situation.

There’s something so classic about wedding photos in front of red church doors… right? But I also really love the contrast of the next spot we went to for portraits being on the bridge and so full of contrast, lines and shadow to create a unique, modern and creative look!

kim + joe | an intimate summer wedding at stone gables estate

Falling in love while quarantined during Covid, Kim and Joe knew very quickly that they had a special connection and were meant to be together…

Celebrating at Stone Gables Estate in Elizabethtown, PA provided a beautiful and serene setting with multiple ceremony backdrops to choose from for their summer micro wedding. Kim and Joe stayed at the Liberty Spring House and chose to have their intimate ceremony overlooking the lake, adjacent to the historic Star Barn.

urban-row-photo-stone-gables-estate-elegant-barn-wedding_0034.jpg

Sharing a love of dogs, this sweet, thoughtful and loving couple wanted to celebrate their unique love story among a close group of friends and family and I was absolutely honored to be a part of it! Their energy, emotion and smiles just say it all. Kim has this incredible laugh that makes you feel so welcome and at ease… and Joe has this quiet, goodhearted nature about him that makes you want nothing but the best for such a wonderful couple.

Kim shared with me that something Joe dreamed about since he was a boy, was to find a woman that he wanted to buy a Tiffany’s ring for… not only do they each now have Tiffany’s rings, Joe’s daughter Danielle wore a beautiful dress that carried a Tiffany’s blue ombre tone throughout the ceremony.

10 things to look for in a wedding venue: a photographer's perspective

Whether or not you’ve had a vision of your wedding day since you were 5 or you just got engaged and are now diving into all things wedding planning, the first step (after celebrating your newly engaged status, of course!) will likely be to search for and choose your wedding venue.

A lot of couples find this one of the most overwhelming parts of the process… but it doesn’t have to be! The good news is, once you’ve selected your venue, a lot of the other pieces and vendors will fall into place. Hopefully these tips will help you feel more informed with the characteristics to look for in wedding venues that will directly affect your photography. So whether you’re at the very beginning of your wedding venue search or already have a short list of places you’re really interested in and have started touring…

Here is a list of 10 things that are important to consider when selecting your wedding venue:

(especially if high-quality, beautiful and unique wedding photos are a priority!)

urban-row-photo-accelerator-space-industrial-wedding-venue_0002.jpg

1. The space is naturally beautiful and impressive without needing much additional decor, lighting or rental items brought in

A lot of historic / industrial / urban wedding venues (mills, lofts, warehouses, greenhouses, mansions, etc) have tons of charm, character, texture and a feeling of warmth to them because their previous life was full of so much activity. These spaces usually don’t need much added decor at all, and sometimes even make for a more beautiful wedding venue when the architecture is able to stand out and speak for itself.

What does this mean for you? Beauty, uniqueness AND cost savings in other areas of wedding planning… win, Win, WIN!

urban-row-photo-accelerator-space-wedding-ceremony_0001.jpg
urban-row-photo-frederick-douglass-living-classrooms-wedding-baltimore_0006.jpg

2. A variety of backdrops, walls, spaces, gardens and views (this will enhance not only your wedding photos, but also your guests’ experience)!

Your wedding venue is kind of like a really fast mini-vacation (stay with me, ha) if you think about it from the perspective of all there can be to see, experience and showcase to your guests… if you think about your favorite places to visit while on vacation, one of the reasons you probably love getting away and visiting a new place (or even one you’ve been to before), is to discover new ways to experience them with your favorite people.

urban-row-photo-frederick-douglass-maritime-park-wedding_0003.jpg
urban-row-photo-frederick-douglass-industrial-wedding-baltimore_0005.jpg

3. A solid rain plan for your ceremony space if the outdoor ceremony you’re planning on, can’t actually happen

In the Maryland and PA area, the weather changes so quickly… while this can work in your favor more often than not, if you do need to move your plans indoors, you don’t want to feel like it’s ruining everything you planned. My husband and I actually got married during a hurricane at a vineyard on Long Island. We had no choice but to move our ceremony under safe cover in the breezeway, but in reality, it meant we were physically closer to our guests and it felt more intimate (have I mentioned I’m a glass half full person)? Make sure you’re ok with how the rain plan looks and feels, in advance.

urban-row-photo-holly-hedge-estate-wedding-bucks-county-wedding-venue_0008.jpg
urban-row-photo-ogle-hall-wedding-photographer_0013.jpg

4. Access to your venue at least 2-3 hours before your ceremony begins

I try to have 1 hour of uninterrupted time with you + your fiance to take your portraits before the ceremony (if you want to enjoy the cocktail hour and not be away from your guests taking photos in a rushed manner with everyone wanting to interrupt “just to quickly say hi!”) and another hour for photos of your wedding party + immediate family. If we have access to the inside of your venue during this time, everyone’s happier: grandma can sit down during family photos, your wedding party can put their stuff down, temperature and light are controlled, and there’s no wind in the off chance that we NEED to take your portraits inside due to weather.

urban-row-photo-main-street-ballroom-wedding_0010.jpg
urban-row-photo-main-street-ballroom-wedding-photographer_0011.jpg

5. Only one wedding per day

Most of the venues I’ve worked at only host one wedding per day, but some of them are big enough and designed to host more than one per day. To be honest, I feel like this is something that used to happen more frequently when most weddings were only held in catering halls and hotel ballrooms. The biggest negative to consider is that from my experience, you’re limited in where you can go within the venue since other couples have access to adjacent spaces, so that directly impacts where you can take photos. It also could potentially be confusing for your guests from a wayfinding perspective.

urban-row-photo-ogle-hall-wedding-photographer_0014.jpg
urban-row-photo-accelerator-space-wedding-photographer_0012.jpg

6. Getting ready spaces on-site

Being able to get ready on-site at your venue can save you so much stress in having to find a local hotel / AirBnB and plan transportation for you, your partner and the wedding party that might be getting ready with you… not to mention, if we as photographers only have one location to come to and stay at all day, it means more candid photos of the story of your day and more importantly, a more relaxed and enjoyable experience overall.

urban-row-photo-musket-ridge-wedding-photographer_0015.jpg
urban-row-photo-sagamore-pendry-wedding-photographer_0016.jpg

If you love a venue that doesn’t end up having space to get ready in on-site, that’s ok… what’s the next best thing? Finding a beautiful and spacious AirBnB that has at least one room with lots of natural light that we can take photos of you getting ready in. Bonus if there’s a pretty garden, yard or outdoor porch we can have access to as well! Chain hotels are great for room blocks for your guests but don’t offer the most photogenic backdrops for photos or enough space to comfortably spread out with your loved ones and all your stuff the morning of your wedding.

urban-row-photo-sagamore-pendry-wedding-photographer_0017.jpg
urban-row-photo-sagamore-pendry-groom-getting-ready_0018.jpg

If a boutique hotel nearby offers a suite, that’s always a good option too since there’s usually more light and space - and, instant honeymoon suite for you two the night of your wedding! Some of my favorite local boutique hotels are The Ivy, the Sagamore Pendry, Hotel Revival, Hotel Monaco and The Line Hotel in DC.

urban-row-photo-ivy-hotel-wedding-photographer-courtyard-ceremony_0020.jpg
urban-row-photo-ivy-hotel-wedding-london-cab_0019.jpg

7. Naturally lit spaces

I can’t emphasize the importance of access to natural light because it truly is the most flattering kind of light for all skin types and complexions. While I will use a flash as necessary, as the evening progresses, spaces that are flooded with natural light (from windows or even skylights!) will allow your photos to tell multiple stories throughout the day as the light changes. Documenting your tablescape, cake / desserts in natural light before it gets too dark and moody (if the desserts are setup in advance) is something I always try to do because color, shadow, texture and depth are most visible in daylight.

urban-row-photo-intercontinental-wharf-dc-wedding-photographer_0024.jpg
urban-row-photo-mt-washington-tavern-wedding-photographer_0025.jpg

8. Dimmable lighting / lighting options

You’ll want to avoid using any fluorescent lighting and ask if the lights in the reception space are dimmable, which is hugely helpful for setting the tone for perfect dance floor photos! If your budget allows adding string lights (also called cafe lights or bistro lights), twinkle lights, waterfall lights or uplighting (ivory is best!), they add that romantic, warm glow above a dance floor or al fresco dinner reception that just brings it to the next level!

urban-row-photo-haven-street-ballroom-wedding-photographer_0027.jpg
urban-row-photo-clear-top-tent-wedding-dinner_0028.jpg
urban-row-photo-accelerator-space-wedding-photographer_0026.jpg

9. Parking on-site (or easily accessible via shuttle)

If your venue has parking on-site, it’s one less vendor you need to coordinate (valet / shuttle). Some urban venues that don’t have space for on-site parking will include valet parking for your guests or a shuttle that will transport guests to and from parking to the ceremony / reception site. On the other hand, sometimes encouraging guests to Uber is a great option so everyone can truly enjoy themselves safely. Either way has it’s pros/cons but it’s worth being informed in advance so you’re not scrambling as it gets closer to the wedding and trying to book a valet or shuttle service or finding you haven’t budgeted for this expense.

urban-row-photo-waterfall-lights-wedding-reception_0029.jpg

10. Trust in and a good feeling from the venue’s management and operations team

I fully believe clear, responsive and open communication within your vendor team is a HUGE factor in the success and overall feel of your wedding day. You deserve a vendor team that wants your day to be the best it can possibly be and that starts with the venue’s leadership. From the moment you inquire, to the day you tour, to the walkthrough, final rehearsal and the day you finally get married - will you be communicating with the same person the entire time? Will that person also be on site at your wedding? Who will your vendors communicate with at the venue if they have any questions leading up to the wedding? These are all questions the venue should be able and willing to answer, if you ask!

vignon manor farm | modern equestrian barn | maryland wedding venue

If the vision for your wedding day includes rolling hills, incredible views, an equestrian feel, unique architecture and a spacious modern barn to celebrate with all of your family and friends, I can’t wait to introduce you to one of Maryland’s newest wedding venues!

urban-row-photo-vignon-manor-farm-equestrian-wedding-venue_0003.jpg

Vignon Manor Farm is a unique farm wedding venue offering both indoor and outdoor event space on a private estate in Havre de Grace, MD. As an equestrian facility turned wedding venue, the property dates back to the late 1700's and the current owners, Ashley + Bill, are only the third recorded owners of it since then!

I love that it has always been called Vignon Manor Farm since the beginning; as soon as I drove onto the property, the tranquil and serene nature of the Maryland countryside took over and I felt part of a place steeped in history and adventure. Get ready to see what makes this countryside venue truly one of a kind…

urban-row-photo-vignon-manor-farm-wedding-venue-countryside-views_0004.jpg

I love all the expansive views especially with a dramatic sky and cloud cover!

urban-row-photo-vignon-manor-farm-wedding-venue-in-maryland_0012.jpg
urban-row-photo-vignon-manor-farm-wedding-venue-rolling-hills_0005.jpg

Disclaimer: when I visited and took these photos, it was early December and the transformation of the main reception and event space was underway. You can imagine how gorgeous it will be during every season with leaves on the trees, new dimmable (!) lighting fixtures and a new floor installed inside the main event space!

Included below are quick facts about capacity, logistics and what truly makes Vignon Manor Farm a different type of farm wedding destination (with easy access from Baltimore, Delaware and PA); hope you find it to be a helpful resource!

About Vignon Manor Farm:

Ashley’s family bought the property in 1996 and originally built it as a boarding and training facility for horses. They built everything from the ground up as you see it now. Fun fact: the Tim Allen + Kirstie Alley movie "For Richer or Poorer" was filmed here soon after they bought the property, and before they started building it as it stands today. Now, the property is being transformed into a prestigious wedding and event venue, with no detail overlooked!

INTERESTED IN HAVING YOUR WEDDING AT VIGNON MANOR FARM? HERE ARE SOME QUICK FACTS:

With barn venues and rustic chic weddings being so popular, what makes Vignon Manor Farm unique?

Originally built as a boarding and training facility for horses, the barn, stables, tack stalls, getting ready space and fields have been renovated and are all on-site in one convenient location, available for your use. As a venue located on a private estate, you have access to countless locations and backdrops for photos across the property; with a driver provided by the venue, the on-site gator can easily transport you and your photographer to the best spots to save time and energy on your wedding day! This venue has endless options to make it your own. If you’re looking for a way to easily host all of your wedding events in one location, this is it!

urban-row-photo-vignon-manor-farm-wedding-cocktail-hour-space_0020.jpg
urban-row-photo-vignon-manor-farm-wedding-equestrian-inspired-wedding_0031.jpg

What types of spaces do you offer for ceremony, reception and cocktail hour?

The octagon within the barn can host ceremonies and/or cocktail hour (shown above) while an outdoor ceremony can be held outside in one of the grassy spaces framed by the building or steps from the main building (see both images directly below) with more of an expansive, countryside feel. Your ceremony and/or cocktail hour could also be held at one end of the main event space. The size and scale of the main event space is extremely impressive with large windows on all sides allowing natural light to easily enter the space. The main reception space is about 15,000 square feet with the attached barn being another 10,000 square feet.

For couples that want an intimate ceremony or elopement but don’t want to be at a courthouse, they can choose anywhere on the 160 acre property to have their ceremony.

urban-row-photo-vignon-manor-farm-wedding-photographer_0014.jpg

Is the venue accessible?
The main venue and bathrooms are handicap accessible as everything is on one level with the exception of the second level of the octagon.  The gator is available to those who need extra help getting from the parking lot to ceremony area if the chosen ceremony spot is outside. For guests who can’t manage to walk too far, it is not a problem to easily get them to where they need to go on the property.

Yes! A venue manager will be there to make sure everything associated with the venue runs smoothly.  Vignon Manor Farm does require you to enlist the services of a professional planner or coordinator (that is not associated with the venue) to help all of your wedding day events run smoothly.

Side note: as a wedding photographer who has seen countless instances of how integral and priceless a good coordinator/planner can be, I happily share my curated recommended vendor list with all of my booked couples!

  1. Be strategic about your ceremony start time since it will determine the flow of the rest of the day.

If you plan it well, you can have beautiful portraits of the two of you together while you’re relaxed and excited, not feeling rushed and your hair and makeup is still fresh by choosing to see each other before the ceremony and take advantage of all the benefits of a first look. Not only is it quiet, uninterrupted time for just the two of you, but then you can enjoy the entire cocktail hour since you’ve paid for it and deserve to enjoy a drink and apps with your guests! We’ll also be able to focus on alllll the candid photos of you two (and your guests) since the formal portraits have been taken care of: WIN-WIN!

Also, if all of your formal portraits are done before cocktail hour, we can spend quality time in your reception space capturing all of those details (florals, place-settings, cake, escort cards) that will be untouched by guests and their stuff before they find their seats.

For all of our winter couples, please keep this in mind! It’s almost impossible to get gorgeous naturally lit photos of you after the ceremony (if you don’t do a first look beforehand) unless your ceremony starts super early in the day - which means an earlier wake up call and start time for hair/makeup, since the sun sets so early.

urban-row-photo-baltimore-country-club-wedding_0052.jpg

2. TRUST your photographer and the creative eye that comes with their experience.

…and talk through your vision of the day to help you determine the right kind and amount of photography coverage you need!

Do you need 2 photographers?
Generally speaking, if you and your partner are going to be getting ready at 2 completely different locations, you’ll want 2 photographers otherwise moments may be missed while we’re with your other half.

If you have a large bridal party and/or guest list (140+), you’ll want 2 photographers so we can divide and conquer groomsmen/bridesmaid group portraits and then be sure once the reception begins, that one of us is able to focus on candid shots of guests mingling, reacting to speeches/toasts, dancing, etc. while the other is focused on YOU as a couple and the details you’ve spent so long dreaming of and planning for.

urban-row-photo-habitat-seya-wedding_0053.jpg

Will 8 hours be enough?
9 hours of coverage is the sweet spot for most couples, especially if your wedding takes place in a city where traffic, road closures, races, festivals can/will happen without advanced notice as we travel from the ceremony to reception!

Do you have a special exit planned for the end of the night? …sparklers, a getaway vehicle, petal toss, beach balls, confetti/streamers, glow sticks are all fun options!

Do you have 2-3 locations that we’ll need to travel to throughout the day? ie: getting ready at a hotel/airBnB/your childhood home, a church/beach/park ceremony then a reception at a different venue?

3. The venue coordinator is NOT the same as an experienced and professional event designer / wedding planner.

Hire a professional event planner/coordinator who has your vision and best interests in mind, not the venue’s (and let that close family friend enjoy the day as a guest, despite how much she may enjoy helping you plan and is great at wrangling people)!

urban-row-photo-colorful-fall-wedding_0054.jpg

If they’ve worked at your venue it’s a bonus, but definitely not necessary. What is necessary is professionalism, good communication skills, and a knowledge of local vendors within the industry that can execute your vision or come through in an emergency. If a planner/coordinator is involved, you may not even know that something happened until you learn about it while on your honeymoon ;) but can you imagine how stressful it will be for you or your family members to troubleshoot if your DJ / officiant / caterer doesn’t show up on time? what if a groomsmen’s pants don’t match the rest of the group and/or 1 set is missing? what if boutonnieres are left at the hotel 45 minutes away? what if there’s a sudden flood / snowstorm? what if the shuttle gets lost and isn’t there on time to transport you, your wedding party and/or all of your guests?

Having a planner on your side means it’s THEIR job to worry and solve any and all of the above circumstances!

4. As much as possible, limit how often people are moving from one venue/site to another.

This affects logistics like the amount of time your photographer/videographer are contracted for, extra costs for shuttles/transportation, clear communication to your guests to ensure no one gets lost or arrives late. Couples that choose one site for everything to take place from start to finish are always less stressed and have more time and mental / physical energy to enjoy the day… not to mention, you’ll have more photos of all the moments since your photographers won’t be spending precious time traveling from one place to another either!

urban-row-photo-colorful-gay-baltimore-wedding_0055.jpg

5. Do the da*n photos… as in, take advantage of and enjoy the time you spend on your engagement photos.

I know I’m biased, but I have to say, no one I’ve worked with has ever regretted taking engagement photos. You can read the 6 main reasons why I recommend them HERE, but the reason I mention it as a way to make your wedding day less stressful is because there are so many emotions, thoughts, logistics and personalities coming together that day - the last thing you want to worry about is how to relax and be comfortable in front of the camera. No one should meet the person documenting one of the biggest days of their lives (hopefully it’s me!) for the first time, on their wedding day. In fact, my favorite photos happen when we have a relationship that feels like I’m a friend of yours who happens to show up with a fancy camera. ;) Let all the awkwardness work itself out during your engagement photos, not on your #bestdayever.

main-street-ballroom-ellicott-city-september-wedding.jpg

Regardless of the flowers, dessert and music, at the end of the day, you’re marrying your soulmate and that is all there is to it. The next day you’ll wake up with a whole new adventure in front of you whether it’s a honeymoon, a new house, a new last name, a new family or simply knowing you’ll always have someone to snuggle next to on the couch while you watch Dateline on Friday nights, because you know, #dontwatchalone. ;)

lauren + jeff | sophisticated rustic holly hedge estate wedding

Lauren + Jeff were married at Holly Hedge Estate in New Hope, PA on a warm, drizzly day in October. While the ceremony was planned to be held outside on the brick patio, drizzle forced a move inside to the fieldstone barn at the last minute… which created the most romantic, cozy and intimate feel to their heartfelt vows.

urban-row-photo-holly-hedge-estate-rainy-wedding_0064.jpg

As soft, natural light streamed in through the south wall of windows in the stone barn, we captured the sweetest portraits of the newly married couple and their bridal party in maroon dresses and navy suits.

This Bucks County wedding venue is steeped in history dating back to 1780 and carries with it such a sophisticated, rustic feel to each building and garden space on the property. The country estate, fieldstone barn, pond, brick patio, fountain and natural creek are all incredibly gorgeous backdrops for portraits; it was overwhelming in the best way possible!

As Lauren walked toward Jeff for their intimate and private first look under a willow tree, a few raindrops fell but these two incredibly kind and patient souls, barely noticed anything other than how perfect the day was to be able to celebrate among close friends and family they rarely get to see.

sneak peeks | lynn + nick's intimate summer wedding at wyndridge farm

“we are a little weird and life’s a little weird,
and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours,
we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness
and call it love.” ~Dr. Seuss

Nick’s sister read this quote as she officiated their ceremony under a bright blue sky on the steps of the outdoor chapel at Wyndridge Farm on Saturday. Their love story began the old-fashioned way, online… ;) and Lynn “knew Nick was special on our first date. He was socially oblivious, but sweet, very handsome, and most importantly, smart.”

They designed and created so many of the details for their wedding, namely the cakes and flowers which aren’t easy to do yourself, but they blew me away. The way Lynn lights up whenever Nick’s by her side is my favorite part of their relationship - such genuine joy, kindness, respect, a sense of humor and solid teamwork kicked off the start of their marriage!

Enjoy these early sneak peeks of Lynn + Nick’s Wyndridge Farm summer wedding!

urban-row-photo-wyndridge-farm-wedding-bridal-suite_0001.jpg

Lynn’s bouquet was exclusively garden roses in every shade of pink and it was so lush, full and fluffy. I love garden roses for all their layers upon layers of gorgeous texture! It was such a pretty look for an outdoor summer wedding against the chic and simple timelessness of her off-the-shoulder Theia wedding dress from Garnish Boutique.

urban-row-photo-wyndridge-farm-wedding-pink-garden-rose-bouquet_0002.jpg

I also couldn’t get over her pearl cathedral veil - it was so elegant, dotted with pearls of different sizes throughout the entire length.

Based on their obsession with the Great British Baking Show (which made it’s way into their vows too) and all things sweets, you know their marriage is off to an incredible start when the groom designs, creates and bakes the wedding cake AND 12 other mini cakes. MIC DROP. He just wanted cakes that look and taste good, so why not?!

urban-row-photo-wyndridge-farm-wedding-cake_0020.jpg

The mini cakes were the centerpieces at each table - I love this idea because it’s not only functional, but gorgeous and uniquely personalized to them! It also allowed guests to be an interactive part of the cake cutting since they each had a table cake to cut and enjoy right away. LOVE IT.

urban-row-photo-wyndridge-farm-wedding-reception_0021.jpg

During the mother son dance, Nick picked his mom up and twirled her around the dance floor… cue all the happy tears! Lynn and her mom danced a waltz together that was so beautifully choreographed and full of never-ending smiles as they floated around the spacious dance floor.

urban-row-photo-wyndridge-farm-wedding-reception_0023.jpg

With District Remix keeping the energy high and the dance moves epic, this was a party that didn’t want to end! Speaking of epic, we had to head outside for one final shot at the end of the night - rain or not, it’s so much fun to sneak away for a few minutes to make magic outside before the night is over!

tessa + marshall | codorus state park sunset engagement

Get ready to read the sweetest thing you’ve read in a long time: “I sent her puppy videos every other day because I wanted to make sure she smiled at least once that day.”

I have to say, I don’t think I’ve ever watched 2 people laugh and snuggle so much during an engagement session… Tessa and Marshall, you both are an absolute joy to be around and I love how you make ordinary adventures into extraordinary experiences. Your energy, fun-loving nature and chemistry together is so refreshing!

While trying to choose the perfect location for their engagement session, we considered a few parks and outdoor locations with beautiful views. I’d never been to Codorus State Park before and OHMYGOSH is it gorgeous, serene and so picturesque. Tessa’s breathtaking red curly hair was also literally glowing as the sun was setting, making this a romantic and playful engagement session I’ll never forget. It was all over when we ended with a dip in the lake…

urban-row-photography-central-pennsylvania-engagement_0007.jpg
urban-row-photography-golden-hour-engagement_0008.jpg

Here’s their how-we-met story, in Marshall’s words:

“Well, the first time we "met" Tessa didn't remember me. She thought I was a freshman, but that she had seen me around before. I actually saw her my first week at school at a distance and said to myself 'Wow, if I was going to try and marry any girl at this school, that one right there would probably be the one.' Anyways, she was going through her Athletic Training course at school and I had hurt myself during wrestling practice, so I needed to get my ankle taped. I really only needed to get it taped for about a week after hurting it, but I had a crush on Tessa, so I continued to go back to get my ankle taped for about two months. We talked while she was taping my ankle and started hanging out during our free time. We had very similar tastes in movies and books, so we had a number of things to talk about during our time together. We were just friends for about three years and became extremely close. Then we dated for about a month her senior year, but broke up because of the uncertainties of life after college. We still kept in contact. I sent her puppy videos every other day because I wanted to make sure she smiled at least once that day. She eventually went on a trip with her family to Germany and while she was over there we talked for hours. We knew this time was going to be different from the last, so when she got back from Germany, I was there nearly 24 hours afterwards (by invitation of course). We've been together ever since.”

urban-row-photography-golden-hour-engagement_0010.jpg
urban-row-photography-golden-hour-engagement_0011.jpg

And in Marshall’s words, the proposal…

“So we went out Latin dancing/salsa dancing at the end of April (the same day of my parents anniversary funnily enough). We had a great time and it was the first nice, warm night in ages, so I suggested we go down to the lake near her house to take a walk on the beach. I had the ring in my bag, so when we parked the car I said I had to go back and grab my jacket because it was colder than I expected, when in actuality, I was grabbing the ring. I had it inside of a bulky watch box so she wouldn't become suspicious. We started heading down to the beach and she knew something was up. Tessa kept asking, "What's going on? Why are you smiling like that? What are you planning?" (Tessa- He was acting extremely suspicious). I could barely hold my composure together. We starting hugging, but I was trying to get the ring out of the box. I couldn't get the stupid lid off. I eventually did and proposed and we spent the next hour comprehending what just happened.”

“Everything with Joe just felt right from the very first day.” …shouldn’t all love stories start like this?!

urban-row-photo-main-street-ballroom-wedding_0008.jpg

Being from the same hometown, growing up in the same church, attending rival high schools and having countless mutual connections in their small community in Carroll County, Julie + Joe were truly meant to find each other!

Their wedding day at Main Street Ballroom in Ellicott City was full of overwhelming emotion, radiant joy and the most beautiful rose gold details that complimented the industrial metals and stone foundation walls that make up this historic venue!! Julie was an incredible bride, glowing from the inside out and the way Joe looked at his beautiful bride made my heart explode! I couldn’t get enough of Julie’s gorgeous red hair swept up in her mom’s veil and alllllll the flowing soft tulle netting on her WToo by Watters wedding gown. Speaking of dresses, the mix-n-match styles of the girls’ colored floor length Birdy Grey bridesmaid dresses in pinot noir, had me swooning from the second I saw them!

kathryn + casey | vibrant fall wyndridge farm craft brewery wedding

These lovebirds are absolutely beautiful people inside and out; I’m SO excited to share Kathryn and Casey’s vibrant fall wedding day with you! Their September wedding date held so much meaning because Kathryn’s grandparents celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at that same time!!!

You need to read on to learn about the prominent piece of her wedding jewelry that her grandma made over the course of 20+ years… it made me tear up when I first heard it, such a beautiful way to incorporate a tangible family heirloom over the years!

urban-row-photo-wyndridge-farm-wedding-photographer_0035.jpg

But first, a quick recap of how their love story began…

Having been together since high school, Kathryn + Casey officially started dating in 2009 over Qdoba and Blockbuster (movie + mexican food?! ...my kind of date night!) and have bonded over a love of being outdoors, part of a close knit family, their furbaby, Cooper (who may or may not have his own Insta...) and spending summer nights enjoying a cold beer outside on the patio with cafe string lights above. These are my kind of people!!!

When Kathryn told me their wedding venue was going to be at Wyndridge Farms in Dallastown, PA, I knew it was THE perfect place for them… I also did a happy dance because of all of the unique and beautiful backdrops I knew we’d have for portraits: a modern red barn, metal brewery architecture, idyllic rolling hills and an incredible outdoor chapel to start!

urban-row-photo-wyndridge-farm-wedding-photographer_0027.jpg

The back of Kathryn’s Essense of Australia wedding dress was exquisite and fit her perfectly… I love how all the color and texture in her elegant garden-inspired bouquet compliments the dress too! You’ll also notice all of the hand-lettered calligraphy and signage throughout the ceremony, reception and paper goods that the bride did herself!! I’m honestly in awe of the vision Kathryn had and how beautifully it all came together.

Side note: one of our previous Urban Row brides is the bridesmaid buttoning Kathryn’s dress in the photo below (hi Abby!) and one of our future Urban Row brides is also a bridesmaid (hi Marissa!)… all 3 of these ladies share a love of dogs like I do and have included their #urbanrowpup in either their wedding or engagement photos!

Venues that have separate and spacious getting ready suites for both the bride AND the groom are hard to come by, but you can find them here! Wyndridge maximizes the natural light that pours into each space so each side of the bridal party has a ton of room to relax, prep and look their best in, not to mention easy access to outside AND the upstairs reception space… and DOG FRIENDLY facilities!!!

Hello, Cooper… the BEST golden doodle dog of honor there ever was!

Kathryn’s grandma started her pearl necklace the day she was born and added a pearl to it on each birthday, culminating in the final pearl in the strand for her wedding day…! Hello meaningful bridal jewelry, I want more of you! (*hint, hint, future Urban Row brides*)

sneak peeks | lauren + jeff's elegant fall holly hedge estate wedding

I’m a huge believer in learning something new from every experience you go through and every person you meet… so with this sneak peek, I’m sharing 3 things I learned from Lauren + Jeff’s October wedding at Holly Hedge Estate.

  1. no matter what the weather forecast says, always carry at least one clear umbrella in your trunk.

  2. groomsmen should always check their pants BEFORE the wedding day to make sure they’re the right color and no one has black in what was supposed to be a sea of navy. just sayin’… LOL! It’s the best way to eliminate delays in portrait time if you don’t need to wait for the best man to drive 40 minutes to Men’s Wearhouse and back. ;)

  3. being in a relaxed state of mind is the most important thing you can bring to your wedding day… the ceremony was moved inside at the last minute and it started raining right before their first look… despite the unexpected cloudy, drizzly and dreary weather, we captured amazing moments of Lauren + Jeff, their family and the best day of their lives! we’ll always capture you in the most flattering way possible, you just need to give us some quality time with the love of your life!

I can’t get over how absolutely stunning their Fall wedding was, amongst so much love from all over the country and with a ceremony in the stone barn that didn’t leave a dry eye in the house!

Lauren’s timeless sense of style and elegance came together so beautifully at Holly Hedge; from the subtle texture and intricate beading on her Theia scoop backed wedding gown to her classic white strappy heels and classic low bun updo…

A beautifully historic Pennsylvania inn was the backdrop for so many moments in their relationship, so it had to be the location of their engagement session! Spoiler Alert: Jeff’s surprise proposal will bring tears to your eyes…
